The mortal remains were handed over to his family members by the civil hospital authorities in Ahmedabad on Monday (June 16, 2025) of the former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani. His last rites were performed with utmost honour in Rajkot. Surrounded by grieving family members and close friends, Rupani’s wife, Anjali Rupani bid her final farewell as the funeral proceeded.
As Rupani’s body was charred beyond recognition, his mortal remains were identified on Sunday (June 15, 2025) after matching the DNA samples with that of his relatives. Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel also attended the funeral. Health Minister Rushikesh Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi also paid their last tribute. Rupani was given a 21- gun salute.

Rupani, 68, who was the chief minister from August 2016 to September 2021, and steered Gujarat through the tough times during Covid. He was one of the 242 people on board the ill-fated Air India AI 171 aircraft, which smashed into BJ Medical College Hostel’s mess at Ahmedabad, on Thursday, June 12. Every single person on the flight died, except for one.

Aviation experts have made a significant breakthrough in understanding what caused Air India Flight 171 to crash just 30 seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport on June 12. New high-quality video footage has revealed critical evidence that points to a catastrophic dual engine failure as the most likely cause of the disaster that killed 241 people on board and additional casualties on the ground.

The breakthrough came when aviation analyst Captain Steve examined sharper video footage of the crash, moving away from the grainy “video of a video” that news networks initially broadcast. This clearer footage shows a small gray device deployed beneath the aircraft – the Ram Air Turbine, or RAT. This emergency system only activates automatically when a Boeing 787 experiences one of three critical failures: complete electrical system breakdown, total hydraulic failure, or dual engine failure. The visual evidence is supported by distinctive audio from the footage – a high-pitched propeller sound that differs completely from normal jet engine noise. The RAT spins at extremely high speeds to generate emergency power for essential aircraft systems when main engines fail.

The sole survivor of the crash, who was seated in 11A near an emergency exit, provides the third piece of evidence. He reported hearing a loud bang followed by cabin lights flickering just before the aircraft went down. This matches exactly what would happen when the RAT deploys and takes over the aircraft’s electrical systems. Reports also suggest the captain managed to radio a mayday call mentioning thrust problems, though this audio hasn’t been publicly released yet. While this evidence strongly supports the dual engine failure theory, it creates an even bigger mystery – investigators still have no explanation for why both engines on a modern 787 would simultaneously lose power moments after takeoff. Aviation authorities have already ruled out bird strikes after finding no dead birds on the runway. The black box data recovery will be crucial in determining whether fuel contamination, mechanical failure, or another unknown factor caused both engines to fail at the worst possible moment during flight.

Officials found the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) from the crash site. The CVR records all the cockpit sounds like pilot conversations, radio communications, warning alarms, and background mechanical noises, etc.
