Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for powerful winds battering New South Wales, with coastal areas including Sydney, Wollongong and the South Coast facing damaging winds averaging 60-70kmph and peak gusts up to 90kmph. Inland areas in eastern NSW are at even greater risk, with gusts potentially reaching 100kmph through Thursday morning as the intense coastal low continues to impact the region. Authorities warn of dangerous conditions including falling trees, power outages and hazardous surf conditions until the storm system moves into the Tasman Sea. Forecasters expect winds to gradually ease from Thursday as the weather system moves away, bringing relief to affected areas after days of severe weather.

A powerful “bomb cyclone” hitting Australia’s east coast has forced Qantas and Virgin Australia to cancel at least 55 domestic flights in and out of Sydney, while Sydney Airport has reduced operations to a single runway due to severe weather conditions. Emergency services have responded to over 600 incidents in 24 hours as the storm brings destructive winds reaching 125 km/h, torrential rain up to 250mm. New South Wales emergency services chief superintendent Dallas Burnes warned the situation will worsen over the next 24 hours, urging residents to “delay travel” as the coastal low threatens communities from Coffs Harbour in the north to Bega in the south.
