USDA Flags 60+ California Trader Joe’s Stores: Uncured Pepperoni Pizza Missed Vital Safety Check

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on August 29, 2025, for “TRADER JOE’S UNCURED PEPPERONI PIZZA PRODUCT OF ITALY” in 17.63-oz boxes. The frozen not-ready-to-eat (NRTE) pizza wasn’t presented for mandatory FSIS import reinspection before distribution to Trader Joe’s stores in Southern California.

Look for establishment number “IT 1558 L UE” printed inside the Italian mark of inspection on the front of the package, and lot codes “MFG LOT: 06/16/25 BEST BY: 08/16/26” or “MFG LOT: 06/21/25 BEST BY: 08/21/26” printed on the bottom of the package to identify affected products.

Import reinspection is a required verification process where FSIS officials check that imported meat products match their foreign inspection certificates and examine labels and packaging condition. On a sampling basis, they may also test for pathogens, residues, and other hazards.

When imported meat products are not presented for required FSIS reinspection, they cannot legally enter U.S. commerce. According to FSIS import procedures, “If imported meat or poultry products do not meet U.S. requirements, they are stamped ‘U.S. Refused Entry’ and within 45 days must be exported, destroyed, or converted to animal food.”

According to the FSIS alert, “Consumers who have purchased this product are urged not to consume it. The pizzas were distributed to Trader Joe’s stores in Southern California and bear establishment number IT 1558 L UE and specific lot codes. Consumers with the product are advised to discard it or return it to Trader Joe’s.
