Costco has issued an urgent recall for its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene due to a serious safety hazard. The bottles may spontaneously shatter even when not being handled, posing a significant injury risk to consumers.

The recall affects bottles purchased between April 25 and August 26, 2025, with item number 1879870. The product was sold in 12 Midwestern states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

In an unusual move, Costco is instructing customers not to return the bottles to stores. Instead, shoppers should dispose of unopened bottles by wrapping them in paper towels, placing them in a plastic bag, and then putting them in the trash to minimize the risk of cuts from broken glass.

“There is a risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not handled or in use,” states the company’s recall notice. Costco apologized for the inconvenience in their letter to affected members.

Customers who received the recall notice can still get a full refund by bringing the letter (not the bottle) to their nearest Costco warehouse. For those with additional questions or concerns, Costco directs consumers to contact Ethica Wines, the importer that supplies the Kirkland brand prosecco, at customercare@ethicawines.com or by phone at (786) 810-7132 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

One Chicago customer, Danielle Callas, told The New York Times she had experienced unsettling incidents with the product, including corks that spontaneously popped with significant force. In one case, a cork nearly hit her friend in the eye, while in another instance, wine splattered on her brother’s ceiling.

The bottles can break without warning, even when sitting untouched on a shelf, making this recall particularly concerning from a safety perspective.
