More than 100,000 Melbourne residents must boil their tap water after a burst pipe caused water pressure to drop significantly in Frankston South.

The advisory, issued at 12:30am Monday morning by South East Water, follows testing that revealed dangerously low pressure in the local water system on Sunday. When water pressure drops, contaminants and bacteria can enter pipes, posing serious health risks.

“We’re investigating the issue and sampling the water quality. We’re working around the clock to return water supply to normal as soon as possible,” South East Water stated in their official release.

Residents within the affected area – bounded by Baden Powell Drive, Violet Street and the foreshore – must boil all water intended for:

  • Drinking
  • Preparing food
  • Cleaning fruits and vegetables
  • Making ice
  • Preparing baby formula
  • Brushing teeth

Health officials warn that consuming contaminated water can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, headaches, and other gastro-like symptoms. These risks are especially severe for vulnerable groups including infants, elderly people, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems.

“When water pressure is low, it means the water isn’t flowing strongly through the pipes,” explained Karen Lau, South East Water spokesperson. The reduced pressure allows sediment and potentially harmful bacteria to build up in the system.

Boiling water kills these contaminants, making it safe for consumption. Health authorities recommend bringing water to a full boil (when continuous bubbles rise from the bottom of the pot or kettle), then allowing it to cool before using.

Residents can still safely use unboiled tap water for:

  • Washing dishes (with hot soapy water)
  • Laundry
  • Showering and bathing (though young children should have sponge baths to prevent accidental swallowing)
  • Garden watering (though fruits and vegetables should be washed with boiled water before consumption)

For those unable to boil water, emergency drinking water is available at 7 Dunstan Street, Frankston South.

The situation echoes a similar incident in April when Shoreham Reservoir experienced contamination issues, highlighting ongoing challenges with regional water infrastructure.

Water authorities have not specified when the advisory will be lifted, stating only that testing is ongoing. Residents should continue boiling water until officially notified that the water is safe again.

Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming tap water should contact their doctor or call Nurse on Call at 1300 60 60 24.
