Yorkshire Park Rescues Ukrainian Lions, Welcomes First Titi Monkey

Three young lions from war-torn Ukraine will soon journey 2,000 miles to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in a daring rescue mission.

Siblings Rafael and Shanti were found next to their dying mother in Kharkiv, while solitary Oleg was abandoned by owners fleeing the Sumy region.

"These beautiful lions have not had the best start in life," says Charlotte MacDonald, Director of Animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

This marks the park's third lion rescue, following 13 Romanian lions in 2010 and Aysa with her cubs from Poland in 2024.

The WildLife Foundation is now raising funds for transport, veterinary care, and rehabilitation of these young survivors.

Meanwhile, the park is celebrating another milestone – the birth of its first Titi monkey in the Amazonas walkthrough reserve.

First-time parents Jessie and Javari, who arrived at the park just months ago, are showing strong parenting skills with their new arrival.

"The baby is in excellent health and Jessie is proving to be a very loving mother," shares Greg Clifton, Section Manager of Primates.

Red Titi monkeys form strong family bonds, with fathers taking an active role in raising offspring – visitors can see the baby clinging to both parents.

While not endangered, Titi monkeys face habitat loss challenges and play a vital role in their ecosystems by dispersing seeds throughout rainforests.
