Vitamin D Deficiency Affects 70% of Indians Despite 330 Sunny Days

There are primarily six types of vitamins with further classifications and different characteristics and functionalities, the types are: Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K.

Vitamin D has become exceedingly important due to its rarity, usually vitamins are present in the daily food we consume one way or the other, however very few food items have Vitamin D in them.

1The most important source of vitamin D is sunlight, and a controlled exposure to sunlight daily can regulate vitamin D levels in the body for the majority of the vitamin is received from sunlight.

Very few food items have vitamin D in them like oily fish, livers, egg yolks and so on, and these types of foods can't be consumed in amounts to satisfy the vitamin D need of the body and thus sunlight becomes important, vitamin D is also called the sunshine vitamin.

India is a tropical country which implies there is abundant amount of sunlight all across the country throughout the year, still a huge population of India suffers from vitamin D deficiency.

It has been suggested that the presence of melanin in the brown complexion of Indian skin tone is helpful against cancer but it also slows down the production of vitamin D and thus there is a need for prolonged exposure.

There is a point of contention against the suggestion of prolonged sun exposure, for excessive sunlight may cause other fatalities like cancer and so on, controlled sun exposure is highly recommended.

Lack of vitamin D is endemic to various parts of the globe and recovering its deficiency is extremely crucial. An excessive rate of pollution also comes in the way, however one must try and find ways to get abundant amounts of vitamin D in their systems especially through sunlight.
