Recently, MIT Chicago has conducted research showing that protecting salt marshes in front of protective sea walls can be cost effective.

This research was done by a MIT graduate Ernie IH Lee and Professor Heidi Nepf. The paper was published in the journal Communications Earth and Environment.

During this course of research, Nepf says it could be a comparatively short marsh.
