FDA Egg Recall Update: Salmonella Outbreak Grows as Over 345,000 Dozen Eggs Pulled Amid Class I Health Risk

A previous egg recall has now been updated to Class I status by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as consumers are suffering severe reactions and even death as part of an ongoing salmonella outbreak originating from a Midwest supplier.

While the initial recall was made on September 6, the recall has now been given Class I status on September 30 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); this was done because of the rising probability of the product causing severe health consequences or death.

65 individuals have been infected between May 23 and August 10, with the same strain of salmonella that the CDC has found connected with the eggs from  Poultry Farms LLC, there have been no deaths so far but 24 hospitalizations have been recorded.

Milo's Poultry Farms has confirmed that all "Milo's Poultry Farms" branded eggs and all "Tony's Fresh Market" branded eggs have been infected and are set to be recalled to curb the salmonella outbreak.

These products were distributed to retailers and food service providers in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. The CDC has also recorded the impact of the salmonella strain connected to these eggs in the states of Minnesota, Iowa, Virginia, Colorado, Utah, and California.

Milo's Poultry Farms, LLC. is located in Bonduel, Wisconsin and has halted all production and distribution in order to undertake the appropriate testing and sanitization of farms and processing equipment.

Salmonella can be dangerous for young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems who experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The CDC has also found that this particular strain of salmonella is resistant to nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin, making it difficult to treat with the usual antibiotics and would require alternative medications in order to treat it.
