A novel cooling fabric coating made from chalk can lower the air temperature beneath it by up to 8 °F.

The research was presented by Evan D. Patamia at the ACS Fall 2024 conference, which featured approximately 10,000 presentations.

The coating uses natural materials such as calcium carbonate and barium sulfate, avoiding harmful synthetic fibers and PFAS chemicals.

The concept is inspired by limestone plasters historically used to cool homes.

The cooling effect is achieved through a chemical vapor deposition process and the formation of mineral crystals on the fabric.

Fabrics treated with the coating showed an air temperature beneath them that was 8 °F cooler, and up to 15 °F cooler compared to untreated fabrics.

The coating withstands washing and friction, maintaining its cooling efficiency over time.

The technique can be applied to nearly any fabric and is being scaled up for commercial production.
