FDA Bans Red Dye No. 3: Thousands of Foods and Drinks to Change by 2027
The FDA’s ban on Red Dye No. 3 will remove a common food coloring from thousands of U.S. products. The synthetic dye, chemically known as erythrosine and made from petroleum, gives foods and drinks their bright cherry-red color. “Today’s action by FDA is long overdue,” says Dr. Jerold Mande from Harvard’s School of Public Health. The ban comes after scientists discovered links to cancer in animals. Food makers must remove the dye by January 15, 2027, while drug manufacturers have until January 18, 2028.
