Transdev and John Holland Win €4.2 Billion Contract to Transform Melbourne’s 147 Million Passenger Tram Network

Transdev and John Holland team together to clinch a hefty 4.2 billion euro, nine-year deal to run Melbourne's tramway, beginning in December 2024.

Beginning in 2025, 100 brand-new trams with a 150 passenger capacity each will be added to Melbourne's fleet.

The agreement covers 24 lines, 250 km of tracks, and 600 stations for Yarra Trams, one of the biggest and oldest tram networks in the world.

Region 9 buses in Sydney are similarly overseen by Yarra Journey Makers, a joint venture between Transdev and John Holland.

Transdev's CEO, Thierry Mallet, emphasises the expansion of their Australian business, which now comprises ferries, buses, coaches, and trams.

In New Zealand, Transdev and Hyundai Rotem have extended its contract for regional rail lines surrounding Wellington until 2031.

Transdev reached a turnover of 9.33 billion euros in 2023, transporting an average of 12 million people worldwide each day.

Transdev will arrange transport for 100,000 authorised guests in Paris during the 2024 Olympics, using coaches and buses that run on electricity and biogas.

Transdev was awarded a contract for 1.7 billion euros to run three tram lines and fifty bus routes in Utrecht, Netherlands, beginning in December 2025.
