Assam’s Flood Disaster: Flash Floods Displace Thousands Into Relief Camps While Kaziranga’s Wildlife Faces Dire Threats

The flood problem of the state is further aggravated due to flash floods by the rivers flowing down from neighbouring states like Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

This situation is brought into attention by  the Chief Minister of Assam,Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who recently held accountable to some institutions like USTM for carving out large mountains in order to build buildings for their institute.

Another major problem being faced by the state of Assam is bank erosion by the river Brahmaputra, Barak and its tributaries damage caused due to erosion runs into several hundred crores every year.

The Water Resource department of the government conducts studies where it found the drainage system of the city to be faulty leading to floods.

During the floods the animals were moved to another place because more than half of the area of Kaziranga national park and Pobitora wildlife sanctuary were affected during the monsoon floods.

In Assam the impact on employment and labour due to this natural disaster has led to poverty.

Animals in the zone get affected because of the loss of their habitat, however research also states the cons of floods as floods bring certain nutrients along with them that is beneficial for floodplain ecosystem species like one horned rhino and also elephants.
