Teen Diagnosed with Popcorn Lung After Vaping

The teen has been vaping for years, in secret to cope with all the stress. Her mother claims she had no idea about this particular habit of her daughter.

The nickname "popcorn lung" comes from a similar illness found in popcorn factory workers exposed to diacetyl.

Even though there are treatable effects of vaping in her case, bronchiolitis obliterans (popcorn lung), is irreversible and can be life-threatening.

Symptoms of popcorn lung include shortness of breath, dry cough, fatigue, wheezing, and sometimes skin rashes or fever. There is no cure for popcorn lung; treatment includes steroids, inhalers, oxygen therapy, and in severe cases, lung transplants.

Vaping among the youth has been steadily increasing, about 1 in 4 teens are trying it and 1 in 10 kids are vaping on a regular basis.

The UK plans to ban disposable vapes by June 2025 in order to protect the youngsters from the harmful effects caused by vapes. This is done hoping the reach of drugs amongst the youth reduces.

Despite no confirmed UK cases of popcorn lung from regulated e-cigs, experts warn of the dangers from unregulated products.
