UK Agrees to Transfer Sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius After Decades-Long Dispute

The UK-US military base on Diego Garcia which allows the two western countries to launch military raids under various pretexts and engage in collective punitive actions anywhere in the world, but primarily aimed at serving Western plans for the south-west of Asia (in particular the Middle East), will remain fully operational over at least the next 99 years.

Geopolitical Concerns: Some politicians in the UK believe that transferring sovereignty might be damaging to Britain and might destabilize the region. Grant Shapps, who succeeded Patel as Defense Secretary said it was a "weak and deeply regrettable" deal.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) Position: HRW urges for greater reparations to help the Chagossians affected by the displacement. HRW had asked Clive Baldwin about this and he says "I worry that if we strike an agreement it may perpetuate past errors".

Future: As the UK and Mauritius conclude the testy treaty, the world will be watching how Chagossians' rights, and the Arabian Sea (which might become once again a trouble zone) should be handled in light of regional security which also affects international relations.
